1.Geographic Location
Situated in the east coastal area of China, Shandong Province is just located between Beijing and Shanghai and adjoins such provinces as Hebei, Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu. On the opposite side of Liaodong Peninsula, Shandong Peninsula faces Japan and Republic of Korea across the sea to the east. It covers a total land area of 156.7 thousand sq. km.
2.Administrative Districts
Under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province there are 17 cities of Jinan, Qingdao, Zibo, Zaozhuang, Dongying, Yantai, Weifang, Jining, Tai'an, Weihai, Rizhao, Laiwu, Dezhou, Linyi, Liaocheng, Binzhou and Heze, and under the 17 cities 140 counties (county-level cities or city district at the county level). Jinan is the capital city with the nickname of "City of Springs" for its multitudinous springs. Qingdao is the largest city of the Province.
3.Climate
Shandong is located in the warm temperate monsoon zone, with average annual temperatures ranging from 11 to 14 degrees centigrade, average annual rainfall of 550-950 mm, and frost-free period of more than 180 days in coastal area and more than 220 days in inland area.
4.Culture and Education
Shandong Province is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization and it is also the birthplace of Confucian culture. It is the hometown of Confucius, the great thinker, educator and statesman in ancient China, and also the hometown of Sun Wu, the famous military strategist in ancient China and author of "Sun Tsu Art of War". The ancient culture of Shandong Province is the important part of
splendid Chinese civilization.
At present, in Shandong Province there are 104 universities and colleges, including Shandong University, Ocean University of China and University of Petroleum, 806 secondary vocational schools, 4404 high schools and 252 skilled workers' schools with 1.17 million, 1.09 million, 5.92 million and 320 thousand enrolled students respectively.
5.Public Health Shandong Province has established a total of 16000 medical institutions, including 3000 hospitals and clinics, 177 epidemic prevention institutions and 149 maternity and child-care institutions, offering 230,000 hospital beds for patients. There are totally 136,000 doctors and 96000 nurses in the hospitals of Shandong Province.
6.Science and Technology In Shandong Province, there are 32 academicians in China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering, China's two top academic institutions, and 70,000 technical professionals in total. There are 330 scientific research institutions in Shandong Province. The studies in the fields of agriculture technology and marine science are in the leading position nationally. In 2005, Shandong Province won more than 3,000 national prizes for their outstanding scientific and technical achievements, of which, 500 reached the international leading level, 495 won the scientific and technological awards of provincial level. More than 25,000 patents were applied for approval annually in Shandong Province.
7.Government Organizations Shandong Provincial Government consists of 46 departments under the administration of the provincial governor. The current governor is His Excellency Mr Han Yuqun. The Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Shandong Province is in charge of the foreign trade and economic cooperation affairs of the province. In 17 cities and 140 counties, there are also foreign trade and economic cooperation bureaus, responsible for the foreign trade and economic cooperation in their respective regions.
