Dongying City

I. Facts about Dongying
Dongying lies at the seashore of Bohai, with Beijing, Tianjin and Tanggu to the north and Shandong Peninsula to the south. It is not only the joint area of Bohai rim and the Yellow River economic zone, but also important passage between northeast China and the central plain. It is 400(5 hrs driving), 300(3.5 hrs), 250(2.5 hrs) and 200(2 hrs) kilometers far from Beijing, Tianjin, Qingdao and Jinan respectively. With continental climate in northern temperate zone, it has good climate conditions with four distinctive seasons and enough sunshine. Dongying is a prefecture-level city founded in October in 1983. It is a central city on the Yellow River delta, where lies the second largest oil field, Shengli oil field and the University of Petroleum. There are three counties, Kenli, Guangrao and Lijin, and two districts, Dongying and Hekou,under the jurisdiction of Dongying city with an area of 8,053 kilometers and a population of about 1.8 million.

II. Natural Resources
Dongying has abundant natural resources and great developing potentials. The reserve of oil totals 3.5 billion ton and natural gas totals 23 billion cubic meters. The total land area is about 11.88 million mu, with 6.63 million mu exploited (55.8% of the total). The land resources to be exploited are 5.25 million mu. The pasture area totals over 2.4 million mu and the newly formed alluvial land by the Yellow River is 30,000 mu annually. It is the city with most reserved land resources and the greatest potentials for development along the eastern coast of China. The Yellow River winding through the city is 188 kilometers long with an annual water runoff volume of 30 billion cubic meters. The reservation of shallow brine sea totals 7.4 billion cubic meters, while the reservation of underground salt totals 590 billion ton. The coastline is 350 kilometers in length, with 4800 square kilometers of shallow sea at minus 15th fathom line. There are 180 thousand mu of tidal-flat areas suitable for aquiculture. There are abundant resources of fish, shrimps and shellfish, and the marine species are over 517 kinds, among which the inter-tidal creatures account for over 190 kinds. There are also 292 kinds of medicinal plants such as motherwort, bluish dogbane etc. The Yellow River rice is honored “Green Food” that grows in the best ecological environment; the sweet and crispy winter jujube is honored “Magic Fruit” which only grows in the Yellow River Delta. The soft-shelled turtle and crab of the estuary of the Yellow River are honored the famous brand products at the International Agricultural Exhibition held in China in 1999; the clams and vegetables are also famous. In addition, there are also geothermal resources and tourism sites under development.

III. Infrastructure
The roads in Dongying crisscross, with a mileage of 4800 kilometers open to traffic and the density of roads mounts to 59.1 kilometers per hundred kilometers. There is railway leads to Qingdao-Jinan railway and joins the “Main Artery” Beijing-Shanghai railway. The seaport has established one berth of 5,000 tonnage and five berths of 3,000 tonnages. There is also a newly built airport. The city has full and reliable power stations with 42 transmission and converting stations, where the total amount of power used reach 6.2 billion kw/h. The city has advanced communication facilities with a capacity of 350 thousand program controlled switching systems. The telephone popularization rate is 21% of the city, while in the downtown the rate is 52.4%. The eco-environment is excellent with blue sky and green water as well as various kinds of birds and flowers. The national natural protection zone near the estuary of the Yellow River is the vastest, the most complete and the youngest nunja ecosystem with luxuriant vegetation, wild animals and primitive beauties in the warm temperate zone. The central downtown is constructed with ideal design of big space, big vegetation, and big waters. Each building has different style and the vistas changes along your every step in the central downtown. The downtown is 50 square kilometers at present which will be surrounded by waters and covered by trees. There are many stores, hotels, entertainments and medical care facilities. The market capacity is large, and the annual fixed assets investment totals about RMB 15 billion yuan. The average GDP, saving and consumption all ranks first in Shandong province. It has a team of more than ten thousand scientific and technological talents.

IV. Economic Development
The economy of Dongying kept a quick and healthy developing momentum since the city was established. At present, it has primitively formed an industrial system led by petroleum and petrochemical industry, salt and salt chemical engineering, machinery, manufacture of building materials, textile and other light industries, the processing of agricultural and by-products etc, and has formed considerably sized production bases of grain and cotton, livestock, aquatic products, fruits and vegetables, flowers, silkworm and forest.

In 1993, the State Council listed Dongying as the coastal open city, the first class national open seaport, the Yellow River Delta agricultural comprehensive developing region and the national eco-economic demonstrative region. Recently, the city was approved to establish ecological protection forests of million mu and the quick breed base of fine species. In 1992, Shandong province listed the Yellow River Delta development as one of the two cross-century projects, and set up the goal to construct the city as an important base for energy, chemistry, agriculture, livestock and fishing industry, as well as a modern petroleum port city. In 1994, the UNDP listed the “resources development and environment protection of the Yellow River Delta regions” in the “Priority Project Program of 21 Century’s Agendas of China”. In 2001, the establishment of the Yellow River Delta efficient ecological economic zone centering on Dongying was listed in the national “10th five-year” plan”, in the same year, the UN Industrial Developing Association approved to establish a Green Industry Demonstration Zone of the Yellow River Delta in Dongying. In July, 2002, when Primer Zhurongji inspected the construction of Dongying city and the improvement of the estuary of the Yellow River, he indicated that the country can establish 5 million mu of quick breed paper-making forests and one million ton of wood pulp program. Recently, the Dongying city was approved as the processing and manufacturing base by Shandong Government. All above-mentioned no exception declares a promising future of Dongying city.
