I. Facts about Laiwu
Laiwu is located in the central part of Shandong Province, with Jinan to the north, Mount. Tai to the west, Linyi to the east, neighboring Linzi (the onetime capital of the Qi Dynasty), and facing Qufu (the hometown of Confucius) to the south. Laiwu is a beautiful city of long history and rich in natural resources. The total area is 2246 km2 with a population of 1.236million. As an industrial city of considerable scope and strength, Laiwu is entitled the“Bright Pearl in Luzhong”

II.Natural Resources
Laiwu has always enjoyed the reputation of “Steel and Coal City”. Endowed with iron ore reserve of 650million ton and coal reserve of 1.2billion ton. There are over 30 kinds of minerals, including copper, gold, marble and granite. The marble “Laiwu Black” is as black as the Chinese ink and as glossy as a mirror, which is noted as a treasure internationally. The trilobite fossil in Laiwu, commonly called “Swallow Stone”, was formed 500 million years ago with extremely high value of archaeology, historical relic collecting and artistic appreciation. Laiwu is rich in underground water. The reservoir has a capacity of 430 million m3 enough to satisfy industrial, agricultural and residential needs.

The unique tourism resources in Laiwu are of great enchantment. There is a great deal of artificial and natural scenery. As the site of the Wenyang Culture, Laiwu is a significant component of the Chinese antique Dawenkou Culture. The Great Wall built during the Southern Qi Dynasty, which is still zigzagging among the lofty ridges and touring mountains, was 400 years earlier than that was built during the Qin Dynasty. The ancient battlefield of Changshao War in the northeast part of Laiwu is crowded with eternal glory for its much-told tale of “pressing on to the victory without letup”. Some new scenic spots have been exploited in these years, such as “The first ecological village in China”, the large Qi Lu Canon, the scenic spot of Xueye Lake and the Mount Qi forest Park. These are ideal places for tourism, holiday and entertainment.

III. Infrastructure
Laiwu is ideal for foreign investment. With the development of economy, infrastructure is improved greatly. Customs, commodity inspection and financial service are convenient. Transport lines link up all parts of the city. Two railways and express highways connect the city with outside such as Beijing, Shanghai, Jinan, Qingdao. It only takes 1 hour by coach to Jinan international airport, 3 hours to Qingdao port, 5 hours to the capital Beijing and 6 hours to Shanghai. Postal and telecommunication service is well developed with perfect network of Mobile communication, data transmission, and radio bleeping and broad-belt net. The urban central supplies of heat, power, and water and sewage treatment have complete function with environmental protection infrastructure. The forest coverage is 30.12%. It is “National Top Environment City” and “Shandong garden City”.

IV. Economic development
The farming and by-products of Laiwu are world famous. Laiwu is well-known for its “Three hot and one peppery”, namely ginger, garlic, chicken’s leg-shaped scallion, and Chinese pepper. It is conferred the certificate of origin by the National Verification and Quarantine Bureau and famous as “Home of Chinese ginger” “Home of Chinese Pepper” and “Home of golden honey peach”. Laiwu black pig, black goat, and back-eared and longhaired rabbit are the fine varieties of livestock. These products are sold in tens of countries and regions such as Europe, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The processing, preservation, transportation and sale are flourishing.

Laiwu has a good industrial foundation with iron steel as its leading industry, energy, textile, building materials, machinery, chemistry and new material industrial as its pillars. Laiwu has an annual output of iron, steel and rolling material of over 5 million ton, in which, steel for casting and smelting H-typed iron, spiral-grained iron and anchor iron for ship has won the top prizes of country. Laiwu is the biggest iron ore base in East China with an annual output of 3 million ton, a significant coal industry base with that of 5 million tons and an important electrical industry base with the total installed capacity of 1.6 million kw. The annual machine building capacity has already reached 500,000 ton, casting capacity 3 million ton. Laiwu is an important interior rubber-molding base with a complete production system from spare parts to whole machine and the integration of mechanical, electrical and instrumental equipment. It is also the important interior auto and agricultural machinery spares production base such as brakes, gear crankshaft, cam axle, auto front and back bridge. Products are sold to America, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and many other countries and regions. Meanwhile well-developed textile and other light industries with clothing textile as the representative have formed a complete textile industry system composed by spinning, weaving, printing, dyeing and clothing process, with the spinning capacity of 500 thousand spindles and advanced equipment of gripper loom, hilt loom, air-jet loom, dobby loom, computer embroider machine and high-grade clothing production waterline. All kind of super thin and super thick fabric and toweling can be produced including coloring weaved cloth and jean, in which the annual output of high-grade feather imitating jacquard unbleached and undyed cloth is 1 billion meters, 30 million meters high-quality jean, 50 million meters high-grade clothing outside materials, 5 million meters high-grade imitated toweling, 50 million pieces various towel and quilt products, 20million meters coloring weaved cloth, 1,000 tons knitted cloth and10 million various clothing. The rate of exportation is as high as over 80%.

Laiwu City is an important base of high and new technological research. There are 16 hi-tech enterprises with 58 key high and new technical products (mainly in four fields: new materials, integration of IT, mechanical and electrical equipment, environment protection, hi-tech agriculture), 11 of which has reached the world’s most advanced level. Among these, powder metallurgy, high-functioned magnetic material, polypropylene acryl of large molecular weight and ceramic composite cutting tool are included in the “863” program of tackling the key scientific and technical programs, with the production capacity of 20 thousand tons reluctant steel powder, 40 thousand tons water-fumed iron and steel powder and 3 thousand powder metallurgical products. High-functioned magnetic materials used widely in optical fiber, communication, computer, aviation and space flight have formed the production capacity of 6 thousand tons magnet powder and 2 thousand tons magnetic spare. As one of the 6 key demonstration zones in China, Laiwu agriculture high-tech demonstration zone makes good use of poison free breed and genetic modification.
