IV. Opening up
Weifang was put in Shandong Peninsula Economic Development Zone
by the State Council in 1988. The export-oriented economy has
been developed fast. By the end of 2002, 2,792 foreign capital
projects had been approved and US$3.33 billion had been utilized
according to contracts among which US$ 1.838 billion yuan is actually
utilized capital. The main projects are in light industry, textile
industry, machinery industry, chemical industry, building material
industry and electron industry etc. The investors are mainly from
HK, Macao, Tai Wan, the US, Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Canada,
South Korea and Singapore etc countries and regions. The enterprises
that have been put into operation and production all make good
economic and social benefits.
Weifang has a long history in international trade, which has
progressed rapidly in recent years. In 2003, the total amount
of import and export reached to US$2.255 billion, 22.3% over the
last year. The amount of export was US$1.639 billion, 27.8% over
the last year. The commodities for export cover over 600 varieties
of 24 categories which are mainly sold to more than 150 countries
and regions such as Japan, the USA, Korea and Southeast Asian
countries. The export amount of textile, tobacco, garment, agricultural
and sideline products and food etc takes a larger proportion of
the total amount of foreign trade in Shandong Province. These
years saw the great development in foreign economic and technological
cooperation in Weifang. Year 2003 saw USD $45.78 million turnover
in foreign labor service and 2,537 people were sent abroad, 66.36%
over the last year.
Weifang is a famous historical and cultural city with unique
cultural and tourism resources. “The Thousand-Li Folk Tourism
Route”, which is based on the local customs and flavor, wins the
favor of the domestic and international tourists. Since 1984,
the Weifang International Kite Fair held annually enjoys fame
at home and abroad. Weifang, for its kites, is regarded as the
hometown of kite in the world. The headquarters of the International
Kite Association is situated in Weifang. The city enjoys more
extensive foreign relation and cultural communication. It has
made sister cities with Hyogo of Japan, Freezing of Germany, Pueblo
of the US, Annoying of the ROK, and East Gippsland of Australia.
