Yantai City


I. Facts about Yantai

Located in the east part of Shandong Peninsula (N36°16′-38°23′ E119°34′-121°67′), Yantai is bordered by the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea. Facing South Korea and Japan across the sea, Yantai is one of the 14 coastal open cities in China and a key city around Bohai Sea. Yantai has pleasant climate without severe cold winter and intensely hot summer. The annual average temperature is 11.8℃, the annual average rainfall is about 790mm and the frost-free period is above 200 days.

Yantai governs 4 districts, 7 county-level cities and 1 county: Zhifu District, Fushan District, Laishan District, Muping District, Longkou City, Laiyang City, Laizhou City, Penglai City, Zhaoyuan City, Qixia City, Haiyang City and Changdao County. The whole area of Yantai is 13,746 square kilometers and the urban area is 2,664 square kilometers; the total population is 6.45 million and the urban population is 1.568 million.

Yantai is an ideal tourist city for summer resort with its beautiful mountain, charming seaside landscape and many places of interest and cultural relics. Thus it has enjoyed the name of “The Fairyland on Earth”. Penglai Pavilion, the stone Tablet Inscriptions of the North Wei Dynasty on Mt. Yunfen, the travelling relics of the Emperor Qinshihuang of Qin Dynasty and the magnificent and tranquil “Yantai Yuhuang Summit” are perfect spots for travelling. Moreover, Yantai is a famous "hometown of hot spring", which attracts over 100,000 tourists from over 30 countries and regions such as the U.S.A., Germany, Japan and Hongkong etc.

II. Natural Resources
Yantai enjoys a favorable natural condition by lying near both mountain and sea and is abundant in material resources. It has a large and broad fishery by the sea. The total coastal line and islands along the whole city amounts up to over 900 km, with a more than 600,000 hectares shallow sea within 15m. It is rich in valuable marine products, like prawn, sea cucumber, abalone and scallop. It is also rich in underground mineral resources. More than 30 sorts of minerals have been proved, including gold, copper, Zn, lead, aluminum, magnesite, coal, talcum, granite, silver, steel and graphite. Among them, the reserves of gold and talcum rank the second in China. In addition, it is the center of the production of the famous “Yantai apple” and “Shandong Big Peanut”. The “Yantai Big Peanut” is well known for its long-growing period, big fruits, high content of protein and vitamins, and has enjoyed a high reputation in the world market, being a good sell in over 40 countries and regions. Other agriculture specialties and sideline products are also famous around the world, such as tussah silk, Longkou vermicelli, Laiyang Pear, Big Cherry, Strawberry, prawn, sea cucumber and abalone.

Yantai has rich labor resources in its countryside, among which, over 1 million are in industrial and sideline production. More than 50,000 township enterprises have been established in the county, occupying over 2/3 of the city’s overall production value in industry and agriculture. The products of more than 570 township enterprises have entered the international market. The city owns great potential in developing joint ventures; manufactures processing with customers’ materials, with supplied materials, with assemble end products with supplied parts and compensation trade, with its abundant and inexpensive labor force.

III. Infrastructure
Among 9 major and medium ports in the city, Yantai, Longkou, Penglai and Laizhou are top-level open ports. The whole city has 23 berths above 10,000 tons level, with cargo handling capacity 24.73million tons. Lying in the Shandong Peninsula and Zhifu Bay, Yantai Port is the key national water transportation pivot axis, important meeting place of the channel which connects the south with the north of coastal China. Yantai Port has an area of 4.8 sqkm2, a 5, 216 m pier line, and 15 berths among with a annual capability of handling goods over 16 million tons and container freight volume 110,000 TEU. Yantai Port's passenger ships go directly to Tianjin Port, Dalian Port and so on; and the port has freighter intercourses with the Pusan, Inchun and Kunsan of Korea by “Purple Yulan” passenger-cargo vessel. The freighters go to more than 100 ports of 70 countries and regions. The port also develops regular container transportation with Japan, the U.S.A., Canada, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. By the year 2003, Yantai Port will have 58 berths, 43 deep-water berths and annual volume of goods handled will be over 45 million tons.
Yantai has railway connections with main domestic cities and trains direct to Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Xuzhou, Jiamusi, Shijiazhuang, Jinan, Qingdao and so on.

Yantai highway opens to all directions. By the end of 1998, the mileage of highway reached 5493 kilometers. So far, the all weather highway traffic network has been formed, with the urban district as center (Yanwei Highway, Yanqing Highway, City Circle Highway, No.206 National Highway).

Yantai has made great development in air traffic. Yantai Airport is an international airport open to foreign airplanes, with 4D Standard formally approved by the State Council. There are more than 20 domestic air routes to cities as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Harbin, Shenzhen, Dalian, Xi'an, Xiamen, Wuhan, Tianjin, Wenzhou, Chengdu, Urumuqi as welll as non-stop international and region air routes to Hongkong and Seoul from Yantai.

Yantai has advanced convenient telecommunication network. The long-distance transmission forms a large capacity 3-D network, which is mainly backed by optical cable and has microwave and satellite communication as supplementary. The local transmission net has been formed mainly backed by SDH technology and the information net mainly framed by data communication is under gradual improvement. The city has own the ability of ATM broadband exchange, and can fully support services like VOD video ordering, long-distance medical treatment and teaching, etc.
The IP telephone services have also been opened. Now it has realized digitalization of exchange and transmission covering all services with most advanced international standard. The network operation is safe, and the service level is of high quality.

The electricity supply is guaranteed by Yantai Power Plant, Longkou Power Plant and Shandong Power Net. The Yantai Power Plant now has 2 100,000 kw generator sets to generate electricity power through the united electricity wire. In 1997, the State Planning Committee and Electricity Ministry chose Yantai as the site of the Integrate Coalgas Cooperative Circle (ICCC) demonstration project, and now it is under preparation. Longkou Power Plant, with the designed generating capacity 1 million kw, has been built up and put into operation. The power production of the whole city totals 8.56 billion kw/h and the amount of electricity consumed 7.1 billion kw/h annually.

The science and education in Yantai saw a rapid development in recent years. There are 7 colleges and universities, including Yantai University and Yantai Economic and Trade College, 95 secondary technical schools, 48 scientific research units above county-level and over 320,000 professional technicians. The city has comparatively strong capacity of absorbing and digesting advanced technologies.

IV. Economic Development
Industry:
Yantai has a sound industry foundation, upon which, a comparatively complete industry production system has been established, including light industry, food, textile, machinery, building materials, silk, electronics, instrument, chemical industry, metallurgy and coal. It is one of the important industry bases in Shandong Province, owning over 2700 industrial enterprises above township level. More than 450 varieties of industrial products are exported to abroad, and famous brands “Changyu”, “Polaris” and “Tri-Circles” have been listed among the Chinese Renown Brands. In 1987, Yantai was named as the first “International Grape and Wine City” by the International Grape and Wine Bureau. Changyu Wine, Polaris wood clock and Tri-Circle locks are three famous products among the traditional industries of Yantai. The new industry in Yantai has entered its thriving season, producing cars, air conditioners for vehicles, conductive glass, electronic mask, electronic spare parts, engineering machinery, refrigerating compressor, spandex yarn and computers. Many enterprises on these new industries have advantages over other Chinese enterprises of the same trade. For instance, the production capacity of Yantai Spandex Co., Ltd. is expected to reach 4,500 tons this year, ranking first in terms of production scale and market share in China. Both the level and export scale of Yantai’s clothing manufacture also rank first in China. As for machinery, the domestic market shares of engineering machinery, bearing instruments, pneumatic parts and machinery accessories all hit 70%. The pneumatic parts are mainly exported to Germany, France and other European countries, ranking the first in terms of export. The annual production capacity of car engines of DAEWOO Automobile (Yantai) reaches 300,000 sets, seizing an important role in this field. For the ship-building industry, Yantai has the largest dock with a handling capacity of 200,000 tons, measuring 372m x 120m x 13.4m and the largest hanging machine in the world with a handling capacity of 2000 tons. It can come up with all kinds of ships. Yantai Zhenghai Electronic Mask Co., Ltd. is the largest producer of shadow masks ranging from CPT for color televisions to CDP for computer monitors in China. The production scale and techniques of the electronic spare parts, including the computer keyboard and long-distance power operation system produced by Yantai Dongfang Electronics Co., Ltd., the electronic copper foil by Zhaoyuan Jinbao Electronics Co., Ltd. and ITO transparent conductive glass produced by Yantai Donelly Electronics Co., Ltd., occupy the first place in the same field in China. Yantai Wanhua Synthetic Leather Co., Ltd. poses as the biggest production base of PU materials and synthetic leather products. Yantai Changyu Group Co., Ltd. stands as the largest winery in China as well as in Asia and it outperforms any other enterprise in China in terms of production scale and market share.

Agriculture:
The wide hinterland in the countryside provides more than 450,000 hectares of arable lands, and the total power consumed by the agricultural machines hits 5,400,000 kw. The agriculture in Yantai has reached a high point, and has formed five main parts: grain and oil, fruits, vegetables, animal husbandry and acquaint products. The enterprises processing agricultural products total about 1500.

The grain and oil crops in Yantai mainly include wheat, maize, sweet potato and peanuts. The wheat and maize are known for their high quality and Yantai peanuts have earned a good reputation in the world.

Yantai is well-known for its wide varieties of fruit, and gets the name "hometown of fruit". As one of the key fruit export bases in the north of China, Yantai is abundant in apples, Laiyang pears, long-stem pears, grapes, hawthorns, cherries, and Chinese chestnuts. The area of the orchard of the whole city has reaches 213,000 hectares, among which the area for high-quality apples represented by Red Fuji accounts for 186,700 hectares. Yantai is noted as the biggest production base of Red Fuji. The output of apples in Yantai occupies 1/4 of the total of China, which make Yantai stand as the biggest apple-planting area.

Yantai has witnessed a series of large-scale and high-level vegetable-producing bases to be set up, more than 55,000 hectares of specialized varieties introduced and expanded, such as Burdock, Dutch beans, cherry tomato and colored pepper. The vegetable output has reached 2.31 million tons, and the annual export of 250,000 tons has made Yantai exceed the other cities in Shandong Province.
