Human Resources

With a population of 16.09 million, this area constitutes 17% of the total population of 91 million in Shandong province. Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai have a population of 7.16 million, 6.46 million and 2.47 million, respectively. There are 39 academicians of ChineseAcademy of Sciences and ChineseAcademy of Engineering, China’s top two academic institutions. There are 1.22 million different professional technicians and 34 colleges and universities with 246,000 students.

Marine Resources

Shandong has a coastline of 3,100 km. The manufacturing Base enjoys a coastline of 2,552 km that accounts for 82% of the provincial coastline and 16% of the total national coastline. It owns 241 bedrock islands, among which ChangshanIsland, YangmaIsland and LiugongIsland are the largest islands. There are approximately 800 species including 650 animals.

Mineral Resources

Shandong Peninsula Manufacturing Base is abundant in mineral resources with 20 metals and 40 other resources such as gold, black lead, granite, etc. The gold reserve ranks the first in the country, and accounts for 26% of the total national reserve. Shengli Oil Field is China’s second largest petroleum production base. The important oil extraction area of Zhongyuan Oil Field is also located in Shandong. Shandong produces one third of China’s total crude oil.


Electricity and Water Supply

By the end of 2004, the installed capacity of power generators in Shandong totals 35 million KW, and the annual output of the power plants reached 150 billion kw/h, the peak capacity is 23 million KW. Shandong power grid is the only provincially independent one among China’s 6 national power grids. There are 5589 reservoirs with a total capacity of 15.5 billion cubic meters. The annual average water supply is 25.1 billion cubic meters. 32 sewage treatment plants have been built with a designed sewage purifying capacity of 1.58 million tons per day.

Tourism Resources

Shandong is the birthplace of Confucianism and has a large number of cultural relics and historic sites. Mt. Taishan( 0ne of the five mostwell-known mountains in China), together with the Confucius Temple, Confucius mansion and Confucius Forest , are listed as World’s Natural and Cultural Heritages by UNESCO. In 2004, Shandong hosted over 110 million tourists. The most famous landscapes in the base are Mt.Laoshan, Mt.Langyatai of Qingdao; Penglaige Pavillion, ChangshandaoIsland, Yangmadao Island of Yantai; LiugongdaoIsland, Mt.Shengjingshan of Weihai, etc.

Communication and Transportation

Jiaozhou-Jinan Railway runs through Shandong from the east to the west and Lancun-Yantai Railway runs in the middle of the Peninsula. There are 18 ports in Shandong with an annual handling capacity of 207.53 million tons, providing shipping lines to more than 140 countries and regions. Qingdao has 4 ports and 36 berths of individual handling capacity of over 10,000 tons; its annual total handling capacity is 141 million tons. Qingdao port has 54 berths with an annual handling capacity of 140 million tons and an annual container throughput of 4.24 million TEU, ranking the third in Mainland China. The port will be reconstructed to reach a capacity of 7 million TEU in 2005. Yantai has 10 ports and 34 berths of individual handling capacity of over 10,000 tons; its annual total handling capacity is 48.27 million tons. Yantai port has 37 berths with an annual handling capacity of 25.64 million tons and an annual container throughput of 266,000 TEU. The third period construction of Yantai port will be constructing Bajiao port and starting the construction of 20 tonnage deep port. Weihai has 8 ports with 16 berths of individual handling capacity of over 10,000 tons; its annual total handling capacity is 11.87 million tons.

The area has three civil airports, two of which are international airports offering 59 domestic routes and 13 international routes. There are 68 weekly flights from Qingdao to Korea, 38 to Japan. There are 18 weekly flights from Yantai to Korea, 2 to Japan.

The area has a transportation net that includes railway, highway, port, aviation,etc. The highway mileage has reached 14,157km, of which the expressway accounts for 500 km, the second-grade and over highways account for 6331 km. The density of highways, especially expressways rank top in China.

Finance and Insurance
There are over 30 banks in this area, including foreign invested banks such as Qingdao International Bank, HSBC Co. Ltd Qingdao Branch, China Bank (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd Qingdao Branch, Industrial Bank of Korea Qingdao Branch, Yamaguchi Bank Qingdao Branch, East Asia Bank Qiongdao Agency, Bank of Overseas Chinese Qingdao Agency, and Standard Chartered Bank Qingdao Agency. There are also 13 insurance companies and 20 insurance agencies.

Hotels and Restaurant

There are17 hotels in the area of four-star or above. Among them, 5 five-star and 5 four-star hotels are located in Qingdao, 2 four-star hotels in Yantai, 1 five-star and 4 four-star hotels in Weihai.
